The Rockchip RK3399 system-on-chip (SoC) powers the NanoPi R4S, providing a high-performance and energy-efficient computing platform. This SoC features a 64-bit dual-core Cortex-A72 CPU and a quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU, with the Cortex-A72 cores running at up to 2.0GHz and the Cortex-A53 cores at up to 1.5GHz. The GPU is the Mali-T864, which supports OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0/3.0/3.1, OpenCL, DirectX 11, and AFBC.

The NanoPi R4S boasts impressive video processing capabilities, with support for 4K VP9 and 4K 10-bit H.265/H.264 decoding at 60fps, as well as dual-stream video processing. Power management is handled by the RK808-D PMIC, which enables DVFS, software power-down, RTC wake-up, and system sleep mode.

The device comes with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and does not have any onboard eMMC storage. Instead, it features a MicroSD slot that can accommodate up to 128GB of external storage. Connectivity options include native Gigabit Ethernet, a PCIe Gigabit Ethernet port, two USB 3.0 host ports (USB Type-A), one USB 2.0 host port (2.54mm 4-pin header), and a USB-C port for power input only.

The NanoPi R4S is compatible with FriendlyCore 20.04 (64-bit) and FriendlyWrt 19.07.4 (64-bit), both of which are based on the Linux 4.19.111 and Linux 5.4.75 kernels, respectively, along with U-boot-2017.09.

The PCB of the NanoPi R4S is an 8-layer design with dimensions of 66 x 66 mm and a weight of 40.90g (310g with the metal case). The metal case provides thermal management and protection for the device.

The NanoPi R4S is a versatile and programmable device that can be used for various applications, such as IoT, NAS, and smart home gateways. It supports external USB Wi-Fi adapters, enabling simultaneous dual-band wireless connectivity with speeds up to 150Mbps (2.4GHz) and 433Mbps (5GHz).

The device's open-source nature and support for FriendlyWrt, a customized OpenWrt distribution, make it well-suited for developers and enthusiasts who want to create their own applications and solutions.

The NanoPi R4S offers dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, one directly from the SoC and the other converted from a PCIe interface, allowing for high-speed network connectivity with download and upload speeds of around 934Mbits/second.

The device's larger storage and extensibility options, including 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, a MicroSD slot for up to 128GB of storage, and dual USB 3.0 host ports, provide ample resources for various use cases.

It's worth noting that the NanoPi R4S does not have a built-in MAC chip, but the software automatically generates a MAC address based on other hardware IDs, which does not affect network communication function or speed, making it a suitable choice for individual users.

Comprehensive user documentation and support are available through the official Wiki and the manufacturer's online forum, where users can find information and get assistance with any questions or issues related to the NanoPi R4S.
